Time Sink :/

I'll write a post now even though it isn't that late, just because I've been SO busy today, I don't think I'll have time to later :(.

My mom worked me like a slave today, because we have these REGENERATING TRESS at the side of our house. Seriously, last year i DECIMATED these tress, roots and everything. There was NOTHING LEFT except soil. And somehow, they came back :o.
But yeah, I was doing that from the time I woke up, till now, and basically had no time for myself today to do any figure drawing or anything.

So in my tired state, I worked a little on my work in progress from before. Taking into account the advice that I got! :) I darkened some of the values, pushed the saturation a little, and did some weird background crap :p. I also tried applying some of the colour theory stuff I read about...But I'm not sure how obvious that is.

It's not much, but it's better than not painting at all I guess?

I dunno if I still want to finish this xD. But I kind of do, so I can have an icon to use that I made myself :).

But if not, I can include in an art dump. Because that's what all the cool kids do :p.

  1. stubborn trees! :( hope they don't grow back again ...

I think the updated version is a big difference, that color theory definitely worked. Values, though, still feel too thin to me - but I think that's more a matter of structural understanding. For example noses are 3d triangular forms, but the way you shaded it made it look rectangular and thin. Same with her cheeks, lips, shoulder. Here's a quick paintover I did to try and show what I mean: http://i51.tinypic.com/ypdg5.jpg it does have lots of mistakes but I think it helps describe what I mean. Try to show the different 3d forms rather than a formulaic 'highlights on the right side and shadows on the left', etc. (and draw that other eye in! xP) I think some value and skull studies would help immensely, that way you can concentrate on accurately representing forms and value without having to worry about color as well. hope I helped some O_O

  2. Thanks for the sympathy. I hope they don't come back too :(

I'm SO glad you think the colour theory worked! I was worried because all I'd (I've) done is read about it, and how it's applied. But reading about it and practicing it are two different things, so I didn't know if I was doing it right.

I seriously can't tell you how GRATEFUL I am to you for your paintover. I feel like they're the best thing anyone could ever do when trying to help someone with their art, so I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to do that for me man :). I honestly feel like I just got a gift right now! If there's anything I can ever do for you...Just name it man, I'm so happy with you right now :P. You're the best.

Ahem! But yes...I see what you mean about the nose...I made it WAY too wide. She'd be a freak in real life :P. And I also know what you mean about the formulaic highlights and shadows thing...A bad BAD habit I think I picked up from watching people draw and paint manga. Thanks for reminding me to think about the 3D forms.

I think I'll start doing some value studies of some simple things right away :). As well as some head ones too.

The other eye is coming, my eyepatch idea doesn't fit any more xD.

You helped tons man, I owe you :).

  3. Oh wow :D! I'm so glad you found my paintover helpful. That in of itself is the best gift. I shall look very much forward to your said value and head studies :D (and that eye as well.. though I think an eyepatch might have raised some interesting ideas xD)
PS You keep calling me 'man' - that's fine with me but I hope you know I'm a girl xD

  4. I think I might leave the painting a lone for a while and invest the time into the studies instead :). Ha ha, the eyepatch was cool to me...But now that the painting is a little more saturated and stuff...I feel like it has a kind of cheerful/happy vibe? I'm not sure if an eyepatch would throw it of :P.

OOPS! I did NOT know that you're a girl! :( I feel bad now! D:. Would it be okay if I called you Susie instead or something?

Damn...I just realized that I assume EVERYONE on the internet is a guy because...Well...You know :S. I need to change that :P.

  5. Eyepatches can be happy too! :D lol jk. Do what you think is best! it'll be very interesting to see how you paint that currently blank spot.

I don't know why, but I never had the 'wrong gender' problem online.. I always tend to think of people as grey blobs until I get a clue xP Yes, you were a grey blob once too.

    PS post more .. :D

  6. Ha ha, maybe a heart shaped eyepatch? :P

You're smarter than I am :P. I'm glad we got the gender thing sorted out though, we know each other a little better now :).

PS I will! But it makes me really happy to know that there's someone out there that looks forward to my posts :D
